By George — Wedding Videographer & Editor, SMS Films | 20+ Years Experience | 300+ Weddings Filmed
One of the most common sources of disappointment in wedding videography has nothing to do with the filming, the editing, or the videographer’s skill. It comes from a gap between what a couple assumed was included and what was actually written in the contract.
“Full wedding video.” “Complete coverage.” “Cinematic film.” These phrases appear on nearly every studio’s website — and they mean something different at almost every studio.
After 20 years filming weddings across Sydney and NSW and delivering hundreds of finished films, I want to give you a completely transparent breakdown of what wedding videography packages actually contain, what tends to be left out, what couples most commonly wish they had added, and exactly what you should ask before signing anything.
What Should Be Standard in a Professional Package
Before comparing specific studios, it helps to understand what a professional wedding videography package should include at a baseline level — regardless of price point.
Professionally edited highlight film The centrepiece of almost every package. A highlight film is a cinematic, music-scored summary of the wedding day — typically 3–8 minutes — built from the best moments across the coverage window. This should always be included as a core deliverable, not an optional extra.
Professional audio coverage Vows and ceremony audio recorded with wireless or wired microphones — not just camera audio from a distance. This is fundamental. A highlight film without clear, professionally recorded vows and speech audio is a significantly lesser product, and it should never be something you have to upgrade to receive.
High-quality editing and colour grading Every clip in the final film should be colour-corrected and graded — not delivered flat from the camera. This is part of what separates a professionally edited film from raw footage.
Online delivery and download access A private, password-protected link for streaming and downloading your film. Standard at any professional level.
Clear delivery timeline A written commitment to when you’ll receive your films — not a vague estimate. At SMS Films, standard delivery is 2–4 weeks.
What’s Often Treated as an Extra (But Couples Assume Is Standard)
This is where the real confusion happens. The following are commonly left out of entry-level or mid-range packages and charged as add-ons — but many couples assume they’re included without asking:
- Full ceremony edit — the complete ceremony in its entirety, separate from the highlight film
- Full speeches edit — every speech uncut and in full, rather than condensed highlights
- Teaser trailer — a 30–60 second preview delivered within days of the wedding
- Social media edits / Instagram reels — short-form content cut for sharing on social platforms
- Drone footage — aerial coverage of the venue and surrounds
- Raw footage — all unedited camera files from the day
- Documentary-style feature film — a longer, more complete telling of the day (20–90+ minutes)
- Second videographer — a second shooter for wider coverage or larger weddings
- Extra revision rounds — changes beyond the first cut
- USB delivery or physical packaging — a physical copy of the film in a keepsake box
- Extended reception coverage — late-night dancing and reception atmosphere beyond the core package window
None of these is unreasonable to offer as an optional upgrade. But couples who assume they’re standard — and only discover they’re not after the wedding — are the ones who end up disappointed.
The solution is simple: ask specifically about every item on this list before you sign.
What SMS Films Includes at Each Level
To give you a concrete example of how deliverables scale with package level, here’s how our packages are structured at SMS Films.
Entry-Level Package — from $1,000 (3–4 hours)
Focused on the most emotionally meaningful parts of the day. Typically covers the ceremony, couple portraits, and selected early reception moments. Includes a professionally edited highlight film with proper audio coverage of vows. Ideal for couples on a tighter budget who want meaningful coverage of the core moments without full-day filming.
Mid-Range Package — from $1,749 (5–6 hours)
Extended coverage that adds depth to the storytelling. Includes longer highlight film, more complete storytelling across ceremony and reception, professional audio throughout, and typically includes separate edits of the ceremony and key speech moments. The sweet spot for most couples — enough coverage to tell a complete emotional story without filming the entire day.
Full-Day Package — from $3,199 (8–10 hours)
The complete wedding day story from start to finish. Preparations, ceremony, portraits, cocktail hour, reception entrance, speeches, first dance, and reception coverage. Multiple cameras, professional audio throughout, cinematic highlight film, longer documentary-style edit, and full ceremony and speeches as separate deliverables. The most complete record of the day — for couples who want everything preserved.
Combined Photo + Video — from $4,499
Both photography and videography covered by a coordinated team, with shared planning, travel, and timeline management. Significant value compared to booking separately, with cohesive creative direction across both mediums.
At every level, the goal is always the same: to create something emotional, personal, and professionally crafted. The main difference between packages is how much of the day is captured and how detailed the final storytelling becomes — not the care or quality brought to whatever is included.
When Unclear Deliverables Created Real Disappointment
I’ve seen this scenario more times than I’d like — not at SMS Films, but across the industry — and it’s worth sharing because it illustrates exactly how this problem happens.
A couple booked what was described as a “full wedding video” package. The price felt reasonable. The showreel looked beautiful. They signed without asking for specifics.
After the wedding, they received a 5-minute highlight film. It was well made. But they had imagined they’d receive the full ceremony, every speech in its entirety, and an extended film covering the whole day. None of that was in the package — and technically, the videographer had delivered exactly what was written in the contract. The phrase “full wedding video” had meant something very different to the couple than it did to the studio.
The disappointment wasn’t caused by bad filming or dishonest behaviour. It was caused by language that both parties understood differently, and a conversation that never happened about what the words actually meant.
This experience reinforced something we try to be very deliberate about at SMS Films: couples shouldn’t have to guess what terms like “highlight film,” “feature film,” or “full coverage” mean. We explain every deliverable specifically — its format, approximate length, what it includes, and when it will be delivered — before anything is signed.
The same standard of clarity should apply to any studio you’re considering.
What Couples Most Wish They Had Added
After hundreds of weddings, certain patterns in post-wedding regret are very consistent. These are the upgrades couples most commonly wish they had included:
Longer coverage hours The wedding day moves faster than couples expect. Couples who booked shorter packages often find themselves wishing there was footage of moments that happened outside the coverage window — preparation, the end of the reception, or events that ran longer than planned.
Full ceremony edit The highlight film includes key moments from the ceremony, but not the complete experience. Couples who receive a full, uncut ceremony edit are almost universally glad they have it — particularly for revisiting the specific words said during vows and readings.
Full speeches This is the most commonly regretted omission. Speeches are personal, specific, unrepeatable — full of detail about the couple’s relationship that will mean more with every passing year. A highlight film might include 30 seconds of a speech. A speeches edit preserves every word. Couples whose speeches were particularly meaningful, funny, or delivered by someone they later lose often describe this as one of the most valuable things in their entire package.
Documentary-style feature film Many couples initially think a short highlight is all they need, then find after the wedding that they want to properly relive the day — not just a summary of it. A longer documentary edit provides that depth, and becomes increasingly valued as time passes.
Raw footage Particularly for couples who experienced significant family moments, cultural traditions, or candid interactions throughout the day that may not have made the edited film. As an archival record, it becomes more meaningful over time in ways that are impossible to predict on the wedding day itself.
What couples almost never regret skipping: visual extras like elaborate transitions, stylised effects, or production flourishes that look impressive but don’t add emotional value. What couples regret is missing meaningful memories — not missing visual flair.
How to Compare Packages Without Being Misled
When you’re looking at quotes from multiple studios, the headline price tells you very little without the detail behind it. A $2,000 package and a $3,500 package can contain almost identical deliverables — or they can be completely different products dressed in similar language.
Here’s how to compare properly:
Ask for a specific deliverables list in writing Not “a highlight film and full video” — ask what that means in terms of specific files, approximate lengths, and what events are covered. Get it in writing before you compare anything.
Check coverage hours directly How many hours of filming are included? What happens if the day runs over — is extra time available, and at what cost?
Ask about audio specifically Is professional wireless microphone audio included for vows and speeches? Or is ceremony audio captured only with the camera microphone? This is a fundamental quality difference that isn’t always obvious from a package description.
Confirm who will actually be filming Is this the person whose work you watched, or could someone else be assigned to your wedding? Know the name of your videographer before you book.
Ask about every item on the add-ons list Go through the list from earlier in this post — speeches, ceremony edit, drone footage, social edits, raw footage, extra cameras — and ask specifically whether each is included or an upgrade. You may find that a lower headline price comes with many things charged separately.
Ask the key questions:
- What exactly will we receive, and in what formats?
- How long will each film be approximately?
- Are full speeches and a full ceremony edit included?
- How many cameras will be used?
- Who will be filming, and can I see their work specifically?
- What is the written delivery timeline?
- What happens if something goes wrong on the day?
Look at total value, not headline price A $1,500 package that includes the ceremony, speeches, and a full highlight film may represent significantly better value than a $1,200 package that only includes a short highlight. The only way to know is to compare deliverables side by side — not prices.
A Deliverables Comparison Checklist
Use this when comparing quotes:

Fill this in for every studio you’re considering. The differences will often be more significant than the price gap suggests.
Final Thought
A wedding videography package is not a commodity where the cheapest version of a similar product is always the smart choice. What you receive varies enormously between studios — not just in quality, but in the fundamental nature of what’s being delivered.
The couple who asks the right questions before booking almost always ends up with a package that matches their expectations and delivers real value. The couple who focuses only on the headline price and assumes the rest is standard often discovers the gap between assumption and reality only after the wedding is over — when there’s nothing to be done about it.
Ask specifically. Get it in writing. Compare deliverables, not just prices. And choose a studio that’s proud to explain exactly what you’re receiving — because that transparency, before the contract is signed, is one of the clearest indicators of how the whole experience will feel.
At SMS Films, every package includes a clear, written breakdown of deliverables before you book. Packages across Sydney and NSW from $1,000, with photography from $1,999 and combined packages from $4,499.
